HARD ON ROCK- the life of his father

The great revolution lasted for ten years. His father spent years in prison. In the prison, the food was no free, and since he was captured the only family’s source of living was from Yu Qiuyu’s work-26 yuan per month. However, he needed to fed his father, 75-year-old grandmother, 44-year-old mother, 21-year-old himself, 21-year old sister and three brothers. Averagely, each person had just 0.07 yuan one day. If the number of people were subtracted by half, it may be possible for Yu Qiuyu to support. Nevertheless, it was just too hard to really feed everyone enough food. His father, the one used to be the main financial support of the whole family, felt shame. What he did when he was in prison was just looking to the north where his brother was buried. The Red Guards kept him as a pet but they showed no mercy or love to this pet. He was more like a earth-bag used for people to express their anger. He himself knew, and so he thought of death. Qiuyu was the only hope he had at that time. Easily, he could finish his life, but he wouldn’t left his family to Qiuyu-it was too hard for him alone to afford the whole family. His death would cause no harm to the Red Guards but forced them to find another one to replace him. He would like to just live by this, if his suffering will save others. In this way, he was imprisoned until the end of the revolution.

Late revolution, people became too fanatic to truly understand what they are doing and will do. Starting from the principle that eradicate any culture works against chairman Mao, people at early revolution carry this revolution on by burning books, crashing sculptures and criticizing teachers. These activities themselves were sorts of violence, and progressively the mob became blind to why they need to do these activities. In this case, mob started to burn any books they want, destroy any monuments without a reason and put anyone in public to denounce them. Revolution had grown into real violence, and thousands of innocent people were entangled. 

As a representative of his family, Yu Qiuyu’s uncle and father were caught by the the Red Guards who was the main force that carry this revolution on. His uncle was just a employee of a common company. His uncle had seen all the violence happened around him and came up with just one comment “What is the meaning of this revolution.” And he was reported to the Red Guards. Then he was captured and put into prison for saying words against the revolution. That was how ridiculous that time was. They mistreated him and put him in front of the public. Nobody really cared about his case anymore and why he was caught; they just found it was interesting to see a man being beat. These poor guys became the toys whose fates were held by the mob and who existed just for entertaining other. His uncle finally ended his own life. No more pain would he feel. However, the missing of a toy made the Red Guards look for another one. They didn’t care who that would be, and they just wanted that man be interesting enough, like Yu Qiuyu’s father. His father was put into prison for one sentence as well. However, the whole family could do nothing but watch him being tortured. Even though his father submitted to them that what he said was wrong he was loyal to the revolution, the Red Guard just wanted this toy.

Not all revolution stands for justice. To me, revolutions are just the process to replace a tyrant with another tyrant. Only to benefit, people fight. Undoubtedly, revolution will at first start for a noble reason and the “leader” and “guide” of the revolution can work with people seeking for the same goal. The goal is surely to overthrow the present government which has brought people too much suffering. Always, this small group of people use the naiveness people who believe the new government will be better and even the process of revolution itself will be enjoyable. As a result of that, thousands of people were called up to fight and even to sacrify themselves to the revolution. However, people sometimes hold no idea of what is the reason they fight this battle, and they just hope for a new life- may be better or may be worse. When one kind of life has been felt boring, people just overthrow the leader now. Such an irony it is that people fight with each other just because they merely get bored about the life they have right now and they can pay blood to have it changed. The new leader will at first be with his people, but just for a moment. Later, the leader became more greedy and progressively away from the people. The further the leader has left the people the less he will know what do his people need. Little by little, the new leader just forget what it was like to be one that once protested and fight. By this time, the new tyrant come up. 

That was what was like in China at that time. The revolution revealed the darkest part of human- the most basic desire. Students were no more restraint by disciplines and they used decent reasons to capture their teachers; citizens were no more just citizens. Anything dealt with culture was burn-books, sculptures, historical files and even science. People were just envy of those who had skills to support themselves without needs to suffer hunger and coldness. All these envyness are summoned with the speak of our president.

HARD ON ROCK- a sorrow journey of Yu Qiuyu

Starting from revealing the death of his father, Yu Qiuyu retrospects his life little by little. His mother was a teacher who was well educated and traveled to the village of Yu Qiuyu's father. She found that it was so poor there and kid got nowhere to receive even complete education. Sympathy arose in his mother's heart. she decided to stay in the village and be the teacher of those kids. No sooner, his mother somehow fell in love with his father who was just a poor and even savage farmer in the village. Yu Qiuyu never mentioned his mother's name; his mother to him had been always beautiful and in fashion. His mother had always been fond of cheong-sam, a traditional kind of cloth that was fashioned in China during 20th century. As a luxury to the poor, cheong-sam is rare in village. 

His mother then gave birth to little Yu Qiuyu. His grandfather was holding him in his arms, and looked outside. It was drizzle outside with bleaks- Autumn had come. As he saw these, he named his grandson “the rain in the Autumn”. To me, the name is just fitted into his character and the style of his works. How wise his grandfather was to give him such a beautiful and mystery name- the rain in Autumn. The rain must be cold and also the omen of winter. This grandfather just wanted his grandson to pass through the cold winter. Did that name indicate that this baby will face a lot of trouble in the future as the actual situation is, now? He must know that this child was born in a hard time- people could not feed themselves and suffered the coldness of winter. This wise grandfather saw this; however, he could do nothing about it to help the child. At that time, people were just too hungry to take care of others. “Go for it! Child, you will encounter a lot of troubles and just hold the mind that you can overcome them.” this is the message that the grand father would like to pass on to his grandson.
